Speaker Bio

Jack Ahern, Ph.D,FASLA, Professor
Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning
University of Massachusetts at Amherst

Professor Ahern holds a Bachelors degree in Environmental Design (Massachusetts 1974 ) a Masters in Landscape Architecture (Pennsylvania 1980) and a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences (Wageningen University, Netherlands 2002). He has been on the faculty of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at Massachusetts since 1986, serving as professor and Department Head. He is a registered landscape architect (MA), Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (1996) and a Fulbright Award recipient for teaching and research in Portugal (1997) working on applied landscape ecology and greenways. His books include: Measuring Landscapes: A Planner’s Handbook (Island Press, 2006) (Co-author), Biodiversity Planning and Design: Sustainable Practices (Island Press, 2006) (Lead co-author), Greenways as Strategic Landscape Planning: Theory and Application (2002); A Guide to the Landscape Architecture of Boston (1999); and Greenways: the Beginning of an International Movement (1995) (co-author with Julius Fabos). From 1998 to 2000 he served as national chair of the U.S. Division of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (US-IALE). His research and writings focus on the integration and application of landscape ecology in landscape planning and design, with an emphasis on greenways, green infrastructure and landscape urbanism at multiple scales.
